Are you a gamer? Do you dream about making your own games, or do you know someone who does? The Video Game Careers series was written just for you.
"The Video Game Careers series is just what an aspiring game creator needs to hear. When 'Hardy Says', you had best listen!" - Scott Rogers, author of Level Up! The Guide to Great Video Game Design
Gaming isn’t counter-culture anymore - it’s big business, and it’s getting bigger all the time. Every year, tens of thousands of passionate fans try to break into the industry. And with the popularity of gaming growing higher and higher, that number just keeps climbing.
But for most aspiring developers, trying to find a way in turns into a frustrating, dead-end because they lack the skills and experience to position themselves as valuable hires. Or worse, they do get a job, only to find that they have the wrong mindset for game development and wash out after a short time. The average career in games lasts less than five years.
The Video Game Careers series was created to help.
It’s written by Hardy LeBel, the creative guru behind mega-hit titles like Halo, FarCry and many more. He has 20 years of industry experience, and now he's sharing tips, strategies and insights that can help anyone break into the games business - and thrive.
The Video Game Careers series are short, highly readable career guides for gamers, parents, or anyone who wants to understand game development. They explain the complex world of the business step-by-step, with plenty of interesting examples and diagrams. And best of all, the series is chock-full of humor, career advice from industry pros, and fascinating behind-the-scenes anecdotes from some of the biggest projects in gaming history.
“Due to my tenure in the games business, people often ask me how they or their kids can get a start in the video game trade. I invariably direct them to the Video Game Careers series of books as an excellent place to start. Hardy LeBel paints a straightforward and useful picture of the industry that serves as a good launching point for aspiring game makers.” – Zack Norman, Chief Creative Officer GOGII/textPlus

Although short, this book gives a good overview of what it takes for development, and also dives somewhat into the process behind a game development studio. Works well as an introduction to the series and am looking forward to reading the other books when I get some time.
